Description of this piece: 
Xu Xin uses Traditional Chinese Medicine as a symbol of healing, bringing comfort to people. Utilizing these special materials' visual, smell and tactile senses to create personal wearing experiences. This pendant contains a gardenia fruit (栀子) which mirrors the elegant shape of an amphora. It symbolizes healing medical effects and hopes to bring awareness of the physical and emotional health risk women continue to face. 
In addition, a hand-crafted silver shell tenderly but firmly protects the gardenia fruit, as if it protects and supports the women's control over our own body.

About myself: 

New York based, Chinese artist Xu Xin has a focus in art jewelry. Xu’s artistic approach is deeply informed by her cross-cultural and interdisciplinary experiences. She explores the implications of wearable art, craft intimate narratives infused with a romantic essence. In addition, she is passionate in examining art within cultural and social contexts. She takes an active role in curating and participating in communi- ty art events, culturally oriented art projects.

Xu received a MA in Art & Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, with a Creative Tech certification. Prior to this, she received a BFA in Jewelry Design and Art History from Pratt Institute. Xu has exhibited her work in galleries and museums internationally. She was the Peters’ Valley School of Craft residency artist and a member of Ningbo Arts and Crafts Association.
